minimal or no downtime
As many patients want a speedier resolution to brown spots and pigmentation, the Fraxel technology treats quickly with pleasing overall improvements and minimal or no downtime. Treatment is fast. The unique laser very quickly can treat your entire face in about 20 minutes. It can also be used to treat the chest, arms, and hands. The Fraxel laser can offer two distinct but synergistic procedures to increase the overall improvement of anyone wishing to improve sun-damaged skin.
Most patients describe an increased sensation of heat during the treatment.
To minimize discomfort, we will apply topical anesthesia to your skin before the procedure and use cold air during the procedure. The cold airflow follows the handpiece, so cooling is more effective than before. After the treatment, most of our Irvine Fraxel laser patients feel like they have a sunburn, which usually diminishes in one to three hours.
Patients with superficial pigmentation often enjoy satisfactory results after one treatment.
Patients with long-term melasma or deep level pigmentation issues will likely need two or three sessions over a period of time as deep pigmentation must “rise” to the surface skin levels before it is affected by the laser. Treatment for sun damage and aging is usually provided in a series to get your skin back to its best and periodic treatments to keep the collagen production at desirable levels.
There is no wait time between laser treatments. The dual-wavelength lasers are designed to be easily compatible and can be used in a single session. Typically the Thulium laser treatment is delivered as the first procedure when both pigmentation and either sun damage, aged skin texture, or scarring are also present.
Your skin will be somewhat reddened for about two days with a mild dot-like peel over the following four to five day period.
The new skin beneath will be cleared, smoother and more evenly toned. Good skin protection with SPF 30 or higher sunblock will protect your new skin and help prevent recurrence of pigmentation. Sunblock products with the triple ingredients of ecamsale (trade name mexoryl), avobenzone and zinc oxide will provide the most protection.

Like any medical procedure, treatments with the Fraxel laser carry risks of adverse effects. Fortunately, these are generally mild and do not affect most patients. You and your treatment provider will discuss the potential risks and answer any questions you may have to ensure that you feel safe and comfortable every step of the way. Complications may include:
available treatments
No matter your reason for seeking out laser skin resurfacing treatments, you have options. We will take the time to talk you through the available treatments and help you find the one that fits your situation the best.
Total Dermatology offers other laser treatments like Clear and Brilliant, eMatrix, and Alexandrite. These function similarly to Fraxel but are designed to combat more specific conditions.
Instead of using lasers, radiofrequency (RF) therapies like Thermage use high-frequency energy to warm tissues under the skin and promote collagen production. This works well in combating wrinkles and skin laxity, but doesn’t offer help with scarring or discoloration.
This technique uses abrasive, microscopic particles to gently remove dead and damaged skin. With a process like Silkpeel, you can realize smoother, softer skin in as little as one treatment session.
Treatments like Cosmelan DePigmentation Topical Treatment provide a regimen of anti-aging and depigmentation products to help clear skin in an easy and convenient way. Under the supervision of a cosmetic care specialist, these treatment plans typically run the course of several months and can be performed in the comfort of your home.
